With the festive season well underway, there are plenty of alternatives to traditional red and green garb, according to fashion blog Twirlit.

Vintage-look ski sweaters are a great way to combine cosy knitwear and unique style, while ladies' knitwear options in maroon are also worth considering.

The blog also pointed out that some men's knitwear styles are a cosy choice for fashion-forward women "even if you're not on the mountain" and look particularly good when paired with brown leather boots and jeans.

Popstar Rihanna was recently pictured in the Daily Mail sporting two key ladies' knitwear trends - a black beret and a long, loose-fitting patterned cardigan.

The Umbrella singer was snapped looking comfortable in her knitwear in London visiting a Shepherd's Bush takeaway, where she is said to be a regular customer whenever she is visiting the capital.

She was in the city to perform her new single, Russian Roulette, on reality show the X Factor last weekend.
